出生在南卡罗来纳的歌手、作曲家和吉他手戴夫·巴恩斯在密西西比长大，在那里他最开始着迷于嘻哈但同时受父母影响也展露出了他对经典灵魂,蓝调和R&B的喜爱。在大学时他开始意识到他的使命是成为一位音乐家和词作者。在毕业于中田纳西州立大学,拿到主修唱片工业管理的学位后，Barnes搬到了田纳西州的纳什维尔，目的是为了开始他的专业音乐生涯并取得音乐上的成功。起初他为当地的声民歌所吸引，在当地的插电演奏会上表演个人独奏，但最后他决定进入一个更具有导向性的领域并开始玩乐队，乐队里有吉他手贾斯丁·Rosolion，贝斯手马特·曼格诺弹，键盘手本Shive，鼓手乔希·罗宾逊。Barnes发行了两张独立的专辑，有2004年的《Brother》和《Bring the Sun》以及2006年《Chasing Mississippi》，都由Ed Cash出品。2008年加入Razor&Tie后发行了专辑《You and Me and the World》。2010年04月06日，Barnes发行了他在Razor&Tie的第二张唱片《What We Want，What We Get》。
